Williams honored with Higher Education Award

Dr. Michael Tyrone Williams [EdD ’20, CAGS ‘09], was awarded the 2021 W.E.B. DuBois Higher Education Award by the National Alliance of Black School Educators. This award is bestowed upon individuals who have undergone great personal and professional sacrifice in the service of educational advancement for African Americans. According to NABSE, Dr. Williams “demonstrates excellence and the highest standards of ethical, conduct, integrity and civic and social responsibility.”

Dr. Williams has over 28 years of distinguished service advising, engaging, and immersing youth into post- secondary educational opportunities. Throughout his years of service, he has been a school administrator, counselor, special education teacher, and currently serves as the District Student Transition Counselor for the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.

In addition, Dr. Williams is a nationally acclaimed speaker, educational consultant, and workshop facilitator. He has facilitated workshops before national, regional, and local organizations including the Correctional Education Association, National Conference on Higher Education in Prisons, North Carolina Department of Commerce, National School Board Association Council of Urban Boards of Education (CUBE), and Virginia Rehabilitation Association to name a few. He is also the author of the book “I Count Too: Affirming Students Who Look, Love, Learn, and Live Differently”.  

Dr. Williams holds membership in a plethora of professional associations to include the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, National Alliance of Black School Educators, Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society, and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He is also a life member of the NSU Alumni Association.

"I am both honored and humbled to have been selected to receive this award,” said Dr. Williams. “It has been one of several factors which remind me that the only limits we have are the limits we place on ourselves."
