Elizabeth J. McCormack Chair in the Humanities Job Description

Job Summary
The Elizabeth J. McCormack Chair in the Humanities is open to any member of the Cambridge College full or part-time faculty who has humanities expertise as a senior scholar or practitioner and will promote the humanities in college-wide venues and experiences. The appointee will work closely with the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) and the Office of the Provost to create an atmosphere promoting the salutary and unique contributions of the humanities to life, profession, and learning. Additionally, the appointee will work with other College staff to promote community events related to the arts. A staff member of the Office of the Provost will be assigned to provide the appointee with administrative support.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
In particular, the appointee will:
- Create an individualized plan for fostering discussion and sharing knowledge about the humanities at CC.
- In collaboration with the SAS dean, convene a Humanities-promotion advisory committee.
- Collaborate with the Dean of SAS and the Office of the Provost to ensure that humanities-promoting events are held throughout the year.
- Organize lectures, seminars, symposia, workshops, and classes to share perspectives on the humanities with the CC and broader community.
- Organize and convene at least one community-wide humanities reading event will be held during the academic year.
- Collaborate with the Dean of SAS and the office of the Provost to identify and participate in related grant opportunities.
- Humanities instruction may be negotiated separately.
- Annually, the appointee will write a report for the SAS dean and provost detailing types of events, attendance, and impact.
Education and Experience Required
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in humanities or equivalent demonstrated practice in the humanities (poetry, art, music, etc.)
- College-level teaching experience is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience and commitment to serving adult learners in a diverse academic community are preferred.
Skills and Knowledge Required
- Knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to promoting the humanities.
- Understanding of culturally-responsive, social justice pedagogy and a commitment to reducing equity gaps and systemic barriers in learning.
- Ability to provide and develop new workshops as needed.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, administrators, faculty, staff, and students in a diverse learning community.
- Ability to work independently, manage time well, and manage complex projects with minimal supervision
- A commitment to collegiality and collaboration
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility
- Excellent written and oral communication, as well as strong presentation skills
