CC Undergraduate Advising

New Students

All new students must complete the following steps prior to advising:

1. Placement test

• Plan to sit this test as soon as you are accepted.
• The writing portion of the test runs approximately 1 hour.
• The maths portion is untimed, and can take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours.
• This test has no impact on your acceptance to Cambridge College. It simply determines which writing and maths classes you should take.

2. Group Advising and Registration Session (GARS)

• You can sign up for a GARS meeting once you have completed your placement test.
• During GARS, you will meet your academic advisor and register for classes.
• If you are transferring credits, they will be assigned to your academic plan during GARS.

First Term Advising

During your first term at Cambridge College, you and your academic advisor will work together to review your transfer credits and build your academic plan.

All new students are encouraged to:

• Make an appointment to meet with your academic advisor midway through the first term.
• Meet with your Program Coordinator.
• Learn about concentrations available in your major.
• Discuss opportunities for portfolio.

At the end of your first term, you are encouraged to:

• Complete any follow-up items with your advisor.
• Plan your registration for the next semester.
• Transition to ongoing advising.

Ongoing Advising

Following the conclusion of your first term, you will be assigned an academic advisor. Your advisor will:

• Update your academic plan with you each term .
• Guide you in selecting the right courses for graduation
• Monitor your academic progress
• Recommend academic support (tutors) as needed
• Assist you with access to disability support
• Serve as a resource for creating portfolios and taking standardized tests (e.g. Accuplacer, CLEP)
• Provide current and accurate information regarding administrative, policy and curriculum changes
• Assist you with access to career counseling services
• Facilitate interaction between College administrators and staff (student advisory committees, Senate) as it relates to  academics and student life.
