50th Anniversary Overview

CC bldgs 1971 and 2021

In 1971, a small group of educators dreamed about a place that would serve working adults who had been excluded from traditional pathways to higher education.  Out of this dream, Cambridge College was born, first as part of Newton College of the Sacred Heart’s new graduate program named the Institute of Open Education (IOE) enrolling almost 100 students in its first class in July 1971.  Then it became a part of the Antioch University Network, and finally on March 12, 1981, an independent institution known as Cambridge College was established.

Today there are more than 38,000 Cambridge College graduates serving their communities through education, social services, public and private management, and many other fields. These working adults have combined their talents, experiences, and commitments with the guidance and vision of the College to build better communities and better lives.  It is because of their dreams that the College was founded, and it is to their dreams and the dreams of many thousands like them – that the College has committed its resources and upholds its mission to provide academically excellent, time-efficient, and cost-effective higher education for a diverse population of working adults for whom those opportunities may have been limited or denied.

Cambridge College is celebrating its Golden Anniversary year starting in June 2021, and culminating in June 2022. The year-long golden celebration honors Cambridge College's rich history of inspiring, guiding, and transforming the lives of many while also honoring our continous transformation with new and innovative programs, remarkable student success outcomes and notable achievements of faculty and alumni.
