Academic Support Services

All students are encouraged to make regular use of academic support services to facilitate success in a rigorous academic environment. Tutors assist students with a focus on self-sufficiency so that students learn to work autonomously while building confidence.

Services for Students

 
Writing and Math Support

The College provides a staff of experienced professional tutors to any student in need of academic support. Writing tutors are available in the following locations:

  • Boston, MA
  • Lawrence, MA
  • Springfield, MA 

Students are permitted one appointment of 45 minutes each week. If tutors are free due to a cancellation or “no-show,” students may take advantage of this time in addition to their scheduled appointment.                                                                                                                                        

Library Services

All tutors are experts in guidance through the research process. In addition, all tutors have experience using and teaching the Cambridge College Online Library.

Writing  and Math Support

Academic support services provide assistance to faculty and staff who are working with students in degree-granting programs. In order to help students  meet academic standards, academic support services offer:

  • Embedded tutoring 
  • Alternative testing arrangements for students in accordance with academic standards and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 
  • Referral service for students who are in need of extra support 
  • Short presentations to classes on APA citations, study skills, or use of the Cambridge College Online Library

How many appointments per week can I schedule?

Students are permitted one appointment of 45 minutes each week. If tutors are free due to a cancellation or “no-show,” students may take advantage of this time in addition to their scheduled appointment.

What happens if I cannot keep my appointment?
  • Tutoring services are in large demand as the semester progresses.
  • If you make appointments and do not keep them and do not cancel them, you are denying other students the opportunity to get help.
  • Failure to keep appointments or cancel them may result in your being denied the opportunity to sign up for tutoring services.
  • To cancel an appointment, please give 24 hour notice.
What should I bring to my appointment?

When you come for an appointment, please bring with you:

  • The class syllabus, including the specific assignment you are working on
  • Any reading material including texts that are part of the assignment
  • Any earlier drafts of your assignment including any instructor’s comments that you have received

Please bring your work as a printed copy or on a flash drive.

What can I work on with a tutor?

Tutors can assist with math work as well as any stage of the writing process, including:

  • Brainstorming
  • Developing and organizing ideas
  • Critical thinking
  • Research
  • Revision
  • Documentation/APA citation
  • Facing the “impossible” – deadlines, managing time, understanding your assignment
What can a tutor do for me?

Cambridge College writing tutors:

  • Assist students in revision with a focus on self-sufficiency so that students can learn to revise their own work.
  • Work with students to review written assignments.
What do tutors NOT do?

Cambridge College writing tutors do not:

  • Copy-edit student assignments.
  • Engage in excessive collaboration.
  • Suggest grades or rewrite students’ work.
  • Take responsibility for the final grade
Is tutoring available between semesters?

Tutoring is unavailable:

  • During official college holidays
  • Between semesters
